Μπορεί να μην κέρδισε πολλά βραβεία, αλλά δύο απ' αυτά ήταν τα πιο σημαντικά της βραδιάς. H δραματική περιπέτεια φαντασίας έλαβε το βραβείο ''Καλύτερης Ταινίας'' και το ''Καλύτερου Σκηνοθέτη''. Πρωταγωνίστρια της ταινίας είναι η Eliza (Sally Hawkins), μία άλαλη καθαρίστρια που εργάζεται σε ένα μυστικό εργαστήριο υψίστης ασφαλείας της κυβέρνησης κατά τη διάρκεια του Ψυχρού Πολέμου στη δεκαετία του ‘60. Η μοναχική της ζωή θα αλλάξει άρδην όταν ανακαλύψει πως στις εγκαταστάσεις ζει ένα μυστηριώδες αμφίβιο πλάσμα που είναι το υποκείμενο ενός πειράματος. Οι δυο τους θα αναπτύξουν έναν ιδιαίτερο δεσμό, ενώ σύντομα η Eliza θα συνειδητοποιήσει πως το πλάσμα κινδυνεύει.
